Many seniors want to stay in their homes for as long as they possibly can. At TLC Your Way Home Care, we know how important independent living is for you. But if you choose this lifestyle as you age, it’s critical that you educate yourself (and your loved ones) about the hazards that can come along with it. As part of our home care services, our caregivers want you to be alert to these dangers so you can stay safe and healthy in your home for as long as possible. Here are five common household hazards that can cause falls.
- Bathtubs – Bathrooms are one of the most common places for slip-and-fall accidents to occur. Place a grip mat in your bathtub so you’ll have more traction as you move around. Rails, non-skid floor mats, and higher-sitting toilets are also important safety measures to consider for independent living.
- Stairs and steps – As we get older, climbing stairs and steps becomes much more difficult – and dangerous. Install handrails or ramps where needed inside and outside your home.
- Carpets and rugs – Carpets and rugs (especially throw rugs) can be risky, too. Secure any flooring that’s not permanently installed by using non-skid tape or a rug pad.
- Slick surfaces– Slippery surfaces like kitchen and bathroom tile can cause falls. Use caution when mopping and don’t wax or oil the floors.
- Clutter – It’s easy to hold on to items that have sentimental value. But did you know that areas of clutter around your home can be a safety risk? Clutter can prevent you from safely moving around your home. Avoid these tripping hazards by getting things off the floor. If you have too much stuff to store, consider selling or donating it.
